Step-by-step guide to your admissions and application procedure

Admission with a non-Dutch Bachelor's Degree

Students with a non-Dutch Bachelor's Degree Certificate will have to go through a two-step application procedure. The check for eligibility runs through the Admissions Office on the basis of the procedure outlined below.

There is no point in contacting the Admissions Board or the Study Adviser separately.

Step 1 - Registration in Studielink for one of the three tracks of the MA Programme Literary Studies (60813) in Studielink. Please note: once you register for a track, you cannot change this during the academic year.

Step 2 - After your registration in Studielink, you will receive an email from the Admission Office with instructions on how to upload the following documents:
  • The standard required documents
  • A copy of an English language test result. For English Literature and Culture and Writing, Editing and Mediating, all students, except native speakers, must have a minimum TOEFL score of 110 (internet-based) with a minimum of 24 for all items, IELTS: a minimum score of 8.0 with a minimum score of 7.5 on all items. For European Literatures and Interculturalities: A VWO diploma or a subject certificate for VWO English (mark 6 or higher), minimum requirement of TOEFL iBT 90 (with a minimum of 21 on all items), or IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 6 on all items).
  • A copy of your Bachelor Thesis or another sample of academic writing (about 15 to 20 pages).
On the basis of your application the Admissions Board will determine whether:
  • direct admission to the Master's Degree programme is possible
  • you must first complete the Pre-Master programme (or parts thereof)
  • you cannot be admitted.
Admission with a Dutch Bachelor's Degree

Students who have a Bachelor’s degree certificate with a literary profile and/or knowledge of literature (at least 60 ECTS) are admitted to MA programme, provided they meet the language requirements for the relevant track, and their BA was in a related field (such as English Literature, or German, etc.). Others, such as students from a Dutch University of Applied Sciences (HBO), may be admitted to a Pre-Master programme of at most 60 ECTS. The Admissions Board may decide to shorten the Pre-Master programme for candidates who have already successfully completed one or more of these components.

The Literary Studies Admissions Board will determine whether you can be:

  a) admitted directly,
  b) admitted after following a Pre-Master programme, or
  c) cannot be admitted.

Registration
You have to register for the appropriate track of the MA Programme Literary Studies (60813) in Studielink yourself! Please note: once you register for a track, you cannot change this during the academic year.

We recommend that you complete your registration - including payment of tuition fees! - at least a month before the ultimate deadline, which is 15 August for the start in September.
