Application Form Master Programme Arts and Culture of the University of Groningen

You are about to submit an application form to the Admission Board of the Master's Degree Programme Arts and Culture (CROHO 60087) for academic year 2025-2026.

If you have a non-Dutch degree, then please submit your application via the Admission Office.

BEFORE submitting this form, remember
- to register in Studielink
- to fill out all fields of this form, also if you already know that you want to register for the pre-master.
- that registration and application does not mean that you're admitted to the program of your choice. You will receive a letter of acceptance or a rejection letter from the admission board.
- to meet our registration deadlines. Only applications received by the published deadline dates can be considered for admission. Unfortunately, we will not be able to consider any applications received after the deadline, regardless of when or how they were sent. The deadline is August 15th 2025 for academic year 2025-2026.

General admission requirements:
  • Applicants with a Bachelor's Degree Arts, Culture and Media of the University of Groningen have direct access to the Master tracks ACC, APCE, FCAM and MTPS (following their specialization in the BA).
  • Applicants with a Bachelor's Degree Art History of the University of Groningen have direct access to the Master tracks AH, HAU and LH (following their specialization in the BA).
  • Applicants with any Dutch University's Bachelor's degree who lack the knowledge of the theories and methods of the desired discipline or of how to conduct scientific research may be admitted to the pre-Master’s bridging programme by the Admissions Board. The Admissions Board may decide to shorten the Pre-Master’s bridging programme for applicants who have already successfully completed one or more of these components.
  • An English Language Proficiency test is required for candidates who hold a degree from a University of Applied Sciences (Dutch: HBO)
  • ​For Landscape History (LH) (in Dutch) and History of Architecture and Urbanism (HAU) please contact the study advisor (studyadvice.ac@rug.nl)
The admission procedure for Dutch degree applicants in short:
1. Applicants register via Studielink
2. Applicants send information via (this very) Formdesk form
3. The Admission board reviews requests and decides to a) reject, b) accept c) propose a pre-master programme
4. The Admission board sends a letter of acceptance, rejection letter or pre-master proposal
5. Applicants respond to the letter and accept or reject admission into the Master's programme, or into the proposed pre-master programme
6. The admission procedure is completed after applicants have accepted the Board's proposal and when their information about previous education and language proficiency has been sent by them to the Office for student affairs (BSZ). The application from Studielink will then be finalized by the Office for Student Affairs.

The Master Arts and Culture offers seven tracks:
  • ACC - Arts, Cognition and Criticism
  • APCE - Arts, Policy and Cultural Entrepreneurship
  • AH - Art History (Curatorial Studies, Early Modern, Modern & Contemporary)
  • FCAM - Film and Contemporary Audiovisual Media
  • HAU - History of Architecture and Urbanism
  • LH - Landscape History (exclusively offered in Dutch language/ Landschapsgeschiedenis, alleen Nederlandstalig aangeboden)
  • MTPS - Music, Theatre and Performance Studies

Step-by-step guide to your admission and application procedure

Step 1 - Prior education

Admission with a Bachelor's Degree or Pre-Master in Arts, Culture and Media (University of Groningen)

Once you've obtained your Bachelor's Degree or Pre-Master in Arts, Culture and Media, normally you have direct access to the Master Arts and Culture (that is, for the tracks ACC, APCE, FCAM and MTPS, following your specialization in the BA). To determine whether your chosen master track matches the specialization you followed during your Bachelor or Pre-Master, you NEED to fill in this form.
There are no further English language proficiency requirements.


How to proceed?
Fill in this form and register for one of the four tracks of the MA Programme Arts and Culture (60087) in Studielink.

Please note: once you register for a track, you cannot change this during the academic year.

We recommend that you complete your registration - including payment of tuition fees! - at least a month before the ultimate deadline which is set for August 31st, 2025 for academic year 2025-2026.


Admission with a Bachelor's Degree in in Art History (University of Groningen)

Once you've obtained your Bachelor's Degree in Art History, you have direct access to the Master Arts and Culture (that is, for the tracks AH, HAU and LH in Dutch, following your specialization in the BA). You do NOT need to complete this form. There are no further English language proficiency requirements.

How to proceed?
You only have to register for one of the three tracks of the MA Programme Arts and Culture (60087) in Studielink

Please note: once you register for a track, you cannot change this during the academic year.

We recommend that you complete your registration - including payment of tuition fees! - at least a month before the ultimate deadline which is set on August 31st, 2025 for academic year 2025-2026. 

Admission with a University of Applied Sciences Bachelor's Degree (Dutch: HBO)

Students who have obtained a Bachelor’s degree certificate with a different profile and who after review appear to possess insufficient knowledge of the theories and methods of the desired discipline or on how to conduct scientific research, may be admitted to a Pre-Master’s bridging programme by the Admissions Board.

Furthermore Dutch HBO candidates will need to meet the minimum English language proficiency requirements of
- a minimum TOEFL score of 90 (internet-based) with a minimum of 21 for all items
- IELTS: a minimum score of 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 on all items
- a Dutch VWO diploma

The Arts and Culture Admissions Board will determine whether you can be:

a) admitted directly,
b) admitted after following a Pre-Master programme, or
c) cannot be admitted


The Admissions Board may decide to shorten the Pre-Master’s bridging programme for candidates who have already successfully completed one or more of these components.

Admission with Bachelor's Degree of the University of Groningen or another Dutch Research University 

Students who have a Bachelor’s degree certificate with a different profile or who after review appear to possess insufficient knowledge of the theories and methods of the desired discipline or on how to conduct scientific research may be admitted to a Pre-Master programme by the Admissions Board. The Admissions Board may decide to shorten the Pre-Master’s bridging programme for candidates who have already successfully completed one or more of these components. 

The Arts and Culture Admissions Board will determine whether you can be:

  a) admitted directly,
  b) admitted after following a Pre-Master programme, or
  c) cannot be admitted.

Admission with a non-Dutch Bachelor's Degree

Students with a Bachelor's Degree are eligible to apply.
To assess whether your educational/academic background meets the specific programme requirements, the Admissions Board will consider the level and curriculum of your previous studies, and the grades you have obtained.
Students with a non-Dutch Bachelor's Degree Certificate will have to go through a two-step application procedure.
Please note: Landscape History is taught in Dutch.

Step 1 - Registration in Studielink for one of the tracks of the MA Programme Arts and Culture (60087) in Studielink. Please note: once you register for a track, you cannot change this during the academic year. 

Step 2 - After your registration in Studielink, you will receive an email from the Admission Office with instructions on how to access the Online Admission System (OAS). You will have to provide the following documents in OAS:
  • The standard required documents
  • A copy of an English language test result. All students, except native speakers, must have a minimum TOEFL score of 90 (internet-based) with a minimum of 21 for all items or IELTS: a minimum score of 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 on all items. The only exception could be made for students with a BA/MA diploma from a University in an officially English speaking country, this decision is up to the Admission Officer.
On the basis of your application the Admissions Board will determine whether:
  • direct admission to the Master's Degree programme is possible
  • you must first complete a Pre-Master programme 
  • you cannot be admitted

The form cannot be opened. This form requires files to be attached. Unfortunately, the system that you use (Safari on iOS) does not support this.
A course-by-course certificate should contain descriptions regarding the content of courses taken. If possible, it contains the number of hours of the courses that you have completed according to your academic bachelor curriculum. It can be taken directly from the website of your university or it can be copied from the university course catalogue. If the course descriptions are not available, you can write it yourself.
